Let’s face it:
Doing SEO for a website without noticing any ranking drops is next to impossible in 2019. Google is continuously improving its algorithm and releasing updates almost every single month.
In this race, how would you know what are the techniques to improve SEO, especially in 2019.
That’s exactly what this article is all about. In this article, I’ll show you some of the evergreen SEO techniques that are sure to improve your search rankings.
So without wasting any further time, let’s dive right into the article.
In July 2018, Google officially announced that page load speed is a direct ranking factor as reported by Search Engine Land.
Sites that load in five seconds (compared to those that take 19 seconds to load) notice 70% longer average sessions - Think With Google.
Analyze the page speed of your homepage and check what all you can improve on your website to reduce the page load time. Both Pingdom & GTMetrix gives you all the necessary information to make your site load faster.
As you can notice from the above example of Forbes.com, they can improve on “Adding Expires Headers” and “Reduce DNS Lookups.”
Benefits of Better Page Load Speed
The question is, how fast is really fast. You should try and optimize your site to load in under one second. To achieve that, you need fast hosting service, optimized images, enable browser caching and other technical aspects which you can get from the free Pingdom report.
Internal linking is nothing but adding relevant links to your existing articles to attract additional traffic to the articles and increase user on-site time.
The benefits of internal links are both ways; it dramatically improves your search engine rankings as you pass link juice between all the relevant pages; plus, it also increases user dwell time on your website.
Here’s a great image by Neil Patel explaining the concept of internal linking in a graphical format.
How to do internal linking effectively?
The pages that are ranking in the top #2 - #5 position has higher chances of reaching the top position and proper internal linking can help you do that.
Step 1: Make use of the Ahrefs or SEMRush tool to take out the top-ranking pages of your site and note them down in an excel sheet.
Step 2: Now use the Google search operator to find out the relevant contextual internal linking opportunities within your site.
For instance, here’s a great example how Techradar can add internal links to for its main article “Samsung Galaxy S10 Review” to other relevant pages like the “Samsung Galaxy S10e Review”, “Hands on Samsung Galaxy S10 5G review”.
NOTE: Do not add internal links for the same anchor text across all your articles. If you do so, chances are your site might get penalized due to keyword stuffing.
Internal Linking Quick Tips:
LSI keywords, aka Latent Semantic Index, is a powerful way to attract more search traffic by strategically using the synonyms of the target keyword in the article.
The best way to find LSI keyword is Google Autosuggest or UberSuggest.
Here’s a quick demo of how you can find tons of LSI keywords and use them in your article.
If you’re writing an article on “Make Money Online,” all you have to do is type the search term in Google search and hit the spacebar. Google will show you all the related phrases that relate to your main keyword.
You can also use the “Search related keywords” located at the bottom of each page.
In UberSuggest type in your keyword in the search bar and select your target country.
Next, click on the “Keyword Ideas” tab from the left navigation menu.
Now, as you can see, a lot of additional keywords covering the main keyword comes up.
While writing the article, if you sprinkle all these LSI keywords naturally, your article will start to rank for more keywords bringing in free organic search traffic.
Technical SEO is the most underrated way to improve SEO performance in 2019. The majority of webmasters are focused only on acquiring new backlinks and writing content.
Technical SEO is a fundamental part of any website. There are a lot of things which needs to be corrected while auditing a website.
The best tool to audit your website is ScreamingFrog. It shows you the site structure, page title, meta description, H1 & H2 tags, pagination, response codes and a lot more.
Other things like optimizing 404 pages, submitting XML sitemaps, adding schema markup, optimizing URL structure and robots.txt also needs to be done in order to improve site SEO.
Site audit should be performed every quarter making sure everything is running smoothly.
You won’t believe but doing just this will skyrocket your SEO traffic and you’ll be surprised.
I recommend reading this in-depth article on technical SEO. It also has a quick checklist to follow at the end of the article.
Broken links are dead inbound links hidden on your website. It can be because you deleted the original page or someone made a mistake while interlinking.
In any of the above cases, you are harming your search presence because clearly, Google doesn’t like 404 pages at all.
Broken links are a serious issue as most of the people don’t even know about this problem.
To get rid of the broken links issue, you can use the free “Broken Link Checker” plugin available in the WordPress plugin repository. I personally use Ahrefs to find out broken links from my site and solve them.
After you find out the links that are broken, the first thing to do is 301 redirect them to the most relevant page of your site.
I recommend reading this fantastic article by Ahrefs on how to find and fix broken links like a champ.
